The website below enables a teacher to demonstrate how to produce a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet using collected data. The spreadsheet can then be used to produce charts so that students can interpret the information collected.
Description: The process for creating the sample spreadsheet in Microsoft® Excel 2008 is described below. The Completed Project Movie shows you what the example project might look like. The tutorial movies that follow demonstrate, step-by-step, how to create the spreadsheet and charts using the sample data provided. This project can be easily modified in order to create a spreadsheet and manipulate data relevant to any subject under study. For a complete project description, including goals, objectives, and materials needed, see the Project Overview
Information for Teachers: This project can be easily modified or adapted for other subject areas or other skill levels.
All example files, an assessment rubric, and information about adapting and extending the example project are included in the resource materials available for download with this project.
Creating Your Own Project
Users will learn how to create a spreadsheet that tracks the time they spend using different types of media/information sources, such as television, radio, Internet, personal audio or video devices, etc. They will collect data over a two-week period of time, recording their daily totals on a worksheet. The data will be entered in the spreadsheet and the period totals will be calculated. The learners will also learn how to create and format a 3D pie and area chart to provide a visual representation of their data.
